Creating A Prescription
To create a prescription, you’ll need to search the name of the drug/medication in the Drug Name search field. Once you start to type, a list of options from the drug database will populate for you to select.
In this example, we searched for Lorazepam, the red arrow indicates a scroll bar that will allow you to look at the rest of the drug options listed.
Please note that if a drug is currently Inactive it will be displayed beside the drug name in the search. Additionally, if there are LU codes associated with the drug, that will be displayed with an LU beside the drug name in the search:
Here you’ll need to select the appropriate drug and dosage, and then the following will populate:
Under the drug name you’ll find a text box with the message “Dosage Instructions” visible. Here you’ll be able to indicate the instructions for how the patient should be taking the medication. You’ll be able to include key terms like OD, BID, QID, TID, days, months, and much more! OSCAR will also parse what is written to automatically set the Method, Route, quantity unit, duration and more depending on what is written.
To learn more about what terms the system will recognize when parsing, you can click on the ? on the right hand side of the prescription:
Please note that the dosage instructions will parse after you click outside of the Dosage Instructions text box after writing the text.
The following screenshot shows an example dosage instruction and what you can expect.
If we were to edit the dosage instructions further:
You may also manually modify items like Method, Min, Max, Repeats, etc by clicking into those text boxes, but ideally they should match the dosage instructions.
At the top right of the prescription, you will find option to Override All, which will disable the box requirements
Moving further down you’ll find a text box for Pharmacy Instructions which essentially is a note for the pharmacist – this will be displayed on the print-out/ faxed copies. There are additional check boxes for additional options for the prescription.
The Control Substance area allows an authorized prescribing user to capture the patient’s government issued ID. The Patient Identification Type allows you to set different types of identification.
You may create a multi-line Rx by searching for another drug after you’ve selected one already, this would be done before you select “Save & Print” at the bottom.
Saving and Printing the Rx
After finalizing your settings above you can select the “Save & Print” button to save the medication to the patient’s profile and access the print preview page. Alternately, you may also just select the arrow pointing down to just save the prescription without printing/faxing it.
Please note that you may have an additional button on save, such as “Home Delivery” – this option requires add-ons to your EMR, such as Pillway.
After pressing “Save & Print” the following window will load
Non-narcotics medications will not require the “Controlled Substance” area to be filled.
A Signature Stamp is set to automatically sign off Rx’s otherwise you can utilize the canvas on the top right, under “Actions” and sign the prescription with your mouse. After signing you must press Sign button to paste the signature on the prescription. From the “Actions” you will also have an option to load a signature image that you have stored to your Favorites.
Below the signature area, you can select either to Print or Fax out the prescription. A pasted message will also be entered into the patient eChart to note what was prescribed on this date.
Please note that you also have an option to enter in a Comment to be added to the prescription.
